Our plan
Rather than trying to match college students up with local public schools, my university came up with the clever idea of dedicating some of its ample space to serve as a meeting grounds for students from several local schools and members from all aspects of university life (undergraduates, graduate students, faculty etc.)
What we did
I, like many other members of the university community, volunteered 4-10 hours/week tutoring students in mathematics and helping them through the college application process.
Our results
Though we clearly helped in the short run with the completion of homework assignments and higher grades on exams, it is too soon to examine the complete ramifications of our volunteer work, especially with the college-application-help students, who have yet to hear back about their acceptances.
