Our plan
The area is a remote rural area in the KwaZulu Natal Midlands. The community falls into the category of "poorest of the poor". The community has limited access to basic services. There is only 1 primary school and the learners that need to attend high school walk 30km either way to get to school. Access to transport is very limited. Resulting in a number of learners dropping out of school after grade 7. High number of unemployed teenage mothers between the ages of 15-18, who are also unskilled. Khulisa originally got involved to assist the unskilled out of work youth that are termed "Youth at Risk" in 2003. The programme implemented was the Make it Better Programme that identifies and nurtures potential in these youth who are then equipped with skills to make a social difference in the community they live in.
What we did
Once the Make it Better programme was completed, the youth that were equipped with skills in the MIB programme were able through nurturing and support from Khulisa, to establish a creche in the community for minors that had no where to go if the mother was employed or out seeking work. It was also established that the youth in school needed to have some recreational platform that could serve as a motivation and skills session to reduce the number of high school drop-out and teenage pregnancies. The Amahobe Ubuntu club was formed. The Ubuntu Club focuses on programmes for youth at risk. Khulisa provides them with information and skills through music, art and drama, in order for them to become responsible citizens irrespective of their circumstances. The 'Character Matters" programme has a great impact on the youth. Khulisa would like to assist learners to explore dreams that can assist them strive for a better future. With the support of Standard bank the club members were able to visit the famous Ushaka Marine World in Durban. It was also a platform for them to engage with specialist in career planning to encourage them to continue with schooling. Just travelling in a bus was very exciting for these children. They had never been to Durban before or to the seaside. It was an overwhelming experience for the group. The activities at Ushaka Marine World was unbelievable and for weeks after the visit the children could not stop talking about the experience. It was wonderful to see their eyes light up as this new and exciting world outside of Amajuba Forest and the Midlands.
