Our plan
Our schools are overburdened with increasing numbers of children with complex learning and social issues. There is an urgent and compelling need to provide additional resources and practical support for these children 'at risk'. The JUMP Tutoring Program targets 200-250 high needs students in grades three, -9 in 47 elementary schools in the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB). OCRI's JUMP Math Tutoring program is unique in that it allows a caring adult and a child struggling in school to build a strong learning relationship. The program targets children who require extra support in mathematics, and who would benefit most from one-on-one tutoring and encouragement. Research indicates that all of these students are less likely to perform well and have positive experiences in school. These “at-risk” students are identified by school staff and referred to the program. They include a high proportion of children from the following groups: • low-income families – these children are less likely to have positive experiences at school • new Canadians – their language and culture often act as barriers to learning • children living within families under stress – stress resulting from marital break-up, unemployment, work pressures, etc. is affecting students at school • children with learning disabilities The goals of the program are to: 1. provide schools with community volunteers who have the focus, strategy and materials to change attitudes of students, with regards to mathematics, so that they re-engage in classroom learning; 2. support tutors by encouraging sharing of knowledge, strategies and resources within the volunteer tutoring community.
What we did
JUMP Tutoring is a volunteer-based numeracy program providing early intervention for elementary school children falling behind in math. According to the JUMP philosophy all children can excel in math, and thereby develop the confidence and cognitive abilities to do well in other subjects. Volunteers work one-on-one with students, breaking down tasks into small incremental steps, and rewarding effort with constant praise and encouragement. The cross-section of community volunteers bring wonderful assets such as life-experience, knowledge, multiculturalism, time, broad interests and a shared concern for academic learning.
Our results
"I really believe that you reap what you sow. If you make a serious effort to help others, to make your society more capable, more courageous, less self-focused and more creative, you can lay your head down every night feeling a sense of gratitude and accomplishment. Not everyone realizes the impact he or she has on others, for good or ill, but when you see the positive change you can bring to someone's confidence, ability and empowerment by just spending a little time every week as a tutor, you just want to make that impact as good and as frequent as you can. I feel tremendously grateful that I regularly get to see the light of understanding suddenly animate a kid's face and then mature into a smile of self-confidence. Not only am I teaching them mathematics, my own smile demonstrates to them how rewarding it can be to help others. They're going to grow up to see value in engaging with society and will want to give back to the community some day." quote from VIE JUMP Math Volunteer
