Cafe run by teens, designed by teens, enjoyed by everyone.

Our plan

Our local community center was moving into a beautiful new building that was going to have a café run by teenagers as part of a teen mentoring program. We approached Ben Hunter, the head chef, and asked if the students coming to our after school art program could be involved. We decided to make this a full-fledged identity project for our students. A group of four or five design and writing professionals worked with a team of teens to produce the logo, menu, posters and t-shirts for the café. The students also named the café. The Ironworks Café is now a successful little spot that the entire community looks to for good local and organic food made by teens. It is also a great spot to see artwork being produced by teens in the building.

What we did

We gathered imagery and historical references for the building that the café would be housed in. We met every Tuesday night for eight weeks throughout the summer. We took the students to well designed restaurants in Madison for examples and we talked about how the café would differentiate itself. After gathering images and words we settled on a name. We then did some visual brainstorming to compile a library of images. From those, we settled on a logo. Several of the students worked throughout the year further refining the café’s image. They even hand lettered a typeface to be used with the café.

Our results

The students who stuck with the project even after it was officially over both went on to prestigious art schools. A big part of their portfolios were the work they did with the café. The community center benefited by getting a complete identity system that has made the café shine in the eyes of a very competitive restaurant market. Our class learned a valuable lesson in biting off a huge project. It was well worth it.
