Our plan
We help children love books! How? By taking reading out of the classroom, combining it with games, and giving children choice. By giving children the individual care and attention we all need to flourish (and often take for granted -- not everyone has time for bedtime stories, not everyone can read). If you can, help2read! We currently help disadvantaged children throughout the South African Cape Peninsula, and we are looking to expand well beyond this in the future.
What we did
We recruit and train volunteers from the local community to help children read. Sessions are entirely child-led, so children enjoy themselves. Very quickly, children look forward to reading instead of dreading it. Help2read’s volunteers and children sit in the library or a quiet place outside the classroom, and read or play together one-on-one on a weekly basis, for between one and four terms. During the Intensive help2read programme, volunteers help the same child every day for at least four weeks, so children get intensive one-on-one care and support. We provide volunteers with a box full of books and games. Children quickly find a book they love and learn to love reading!
Our results
Thanks to help2read volunteers, more than 400 children who couldn’t read and hated books now love books and reading! Those children are now able to read to their siblings and, later, to their own children. In helping just one child to read, generations of illiteracy have been stemmed. In time, we plan to roll out help2read throughout South Africa, Africa, and the world. Help us!
