Our plan
The IMP’s goal is to transform teenagers who are failing high school into Baltimore City’s most valuable role models. Teachers are often aware of hardships holding students back, but feel powerless against them. IMP extends a school-based tutoring program to the home, providing both academic and social support to youth struggling with poverty, drugs, and violence. Our “family approach” enables us to offer intensive, long-term, holistic support. A team of mentors is matched with each child and is responsible for adapting to his/her unique needs throughout high school. These “IMP Families” not only support teenagers in overcoming their own adversity, but also show them how empowering it is to help others do the same. Students develop pride in themselves and their communities by participating in service projects side-by-side with their mentors. These triumphant teenagers are equipped with both the education and passion to lead a powerful force of social change.
What we did
IMP families coach life-skills through activities based on three elements: academic assistance, community service and team-building. Academically, each IMP student receives six to 20 hours of one-on-one tutoring per week, SAT preparation, and essay writing workshops. Mentors are also advocates, regularly communicating with teachers to monitor assignments and behavior. In non-academic settings, students develop pride through monthly service projects such as tutoring at local middle schools. They practice teamwork and group problem-solving during field trips such as camping and high ropes courses. Most importantly, IMP Families help students form customized solutions to the challenges they face. As needed, these teams connect students and their families with rehabilitation and social services. They also do all of the hands-on work in between, from securing clean clothing to picking up a teenager from jail in the middle of the night. Without overburdening volunteers, a team of five to six mentors can get the job done.
Our results
Although only 38.5% of Baltimore City children will receive a high school diploma on time, IMP students have acheived a 100% graduation and 100% college acceptance rate. Teens on the verge of expulsion from high school are now attending colleges such as Bowdoin, Purdue, Frostburg State, and University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Dunbar High School also made Adequate Yearly Progress (in accordance with the No Child Left Behind Act) for the first time in 2006, two years after IMP started supporting its lowest-achieving students. The principal has been promoted to an executive position within the school district to assist other public high schools exit the School Improvement List.
