Adopt-A-School Program

Our plan

Initiated in 1985, the Adopt-A- School program is a grassroots partnership between education and the business and private sectors of Tuscaloosa County. The purpose of the program is to utilize the vast amount of human resources and talents of the business community to strengthen, enhance and enrich the quality of education in the 50 public schools of the Tuscaloosa County and City systems. The Adopt-A-School plan was to create partnerships between businesses or organizations and individual schools. Adopters initiate activities that encourage students and enrich their educational experiences.

What we did

Adopters help to provide various services, including: providing readers for classes, hosting job shadowing opportunities, conducting interview skills workshops, providing newspapers for classroom instruction, donating equipment, participating in beautification projects at schools, providing assistance for schools by transporting recycled products, et cetera.

Our results

Students benefit variously from the personal relationship that is developed with their adopter organization. Whether it’s being read to in class, learning about different careers through job shadowing, improving their interviewing skills or any of the other ways in which adopters aid their schools, the outside support of these groups helps to build a sense of community and provide opportunities that the schools alone cannot.
